THE FIRE WITHIN

THE CURE WITH SHAMANIC POWER PLANTS

INTRODUCTION IN A SHAMANIC CEREMONY

In advance, I would like to remind you of the particular circumstances that we should take into account at the cure and teaching with Shamanic Medicine, which is a system of knowledge and practices focused on the medicinal alteration of the therapist's and the patient’s consciousness and perception. The specialized anthropological literature, terms this modification of the consciousness and perception as “Shamanic Consciousness"  or "Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness."

We know from the comparative etnoanthropological investigations of Mircea ELIADE ("Shamanism and Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy") and the trans-cultural psychological studies of Carl Gustav JUNG ("The Archetypes of the Collective Subconscious") that the shamanism represents a universal phenomenon. Its fundamental and indispensable feature consists of this transformation of the consciousness, activated shamanically.

However, when revising the bibliography related with shamanism, it is easy to have present that most of the studies are unsatisfactory due to their descriptive, highly observant and theoretical nature of investigation. They focus only on the social, ethnological, ethno botanical, anthropological and mythological conditions of the shamanic cure; and this only from the conceptual conditions of the shamanically non-altered consciousness of the investigators. We qualify this type of investigation technically as inductive or speculatively ascendant, that is to try to understand something that is ignored or beyond the own knowledge through starting from one's own knowledge. Most of the investigators of this topic not even intend to break the chains of the inductive investigation and maintain bottled in their rational and scientific vision. And those few investigators, those that were initiate personally in the "Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness", knowing, consequently, the utility and healing effectiveness of its action and medicinal instruments, almost have not  been considered by doctors and formal scientists so far.

They prefer namely to remain caught in their intellectual, scientific view of the world. The reason for it is that they are afraid of not being able to handle the worlds, with which they would have to confront in the shamanic state of consciousness. I even heard saying University professors in Psychiatry that they would be afraid of not being able to come along with what eventually could manifest within themselves. They are afraid of a psychotic exit of such an experience. However, this represents a more than very sad certificate of professional incompetence, particularly with such people, who pretend that their vocational and professional reason of being is dedicated to the understanding and the cure of people, who suffer from mental disorders, of whatsoever nature.

All those ostensible "scientific" supports that were carried out about the shamanic conception of life and consciousness only from a shamanically non-altered conceptual and cognitive position of the investigators, lack seriousness and they represent only a group of fragmentary, faulty and really not very scientific speculations. They ignore the personal experience of the psychosomatic and psychoenergetic phenomenology of the "Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness", which is the fundamental therapeutic principle of the Shamanic Medicine all over the world.

Well, the shamanic cure of the illness happens inside this extraordinary state of consciousness that distinguishes itself, to say it in the simplest terms, by a "Being outside" ("Ecstasy") of the daily, common and well-known perception of reality. Alone from this new point or dislocated angle of view can the accustomed optics of our own psychosomatic reality be made uncertain. We term this shamanic procedure therefore "Interruption of the Routine"; that is the interruption of seeing oneself with one's conditioned eyes and the view darkened by one's personal preferences, values, interests and objectives of life.

SHAMANIC FIRE ALTAR

The main objective of our Seminaries consequently consists of the shared awakening and living experience of this “Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness", because with it also takes place simultaneously the awakening of our inherent and natural healing potency ("The Doctor Within"). For this, we make use of the shamanic methods transmitted since immemorial times as a universal strategy of the whole humanity for the acquisition of personal and collective knowledge, strength and health.

In the South American tradition of shamanism, the diverse methods known and used for the instrumentation of the shamanic transformation of the consciousness usually imply the ingestion of medicines known as "Sacred Power Plants". They are sacred because they act like psychotropic biocatalysts on the intrinsic structures of the individual's most intimate and therefore sacred areas, unblocking energetic stagnations and "vitaminizing” energy deficiencies there. In short, illness always means to have an excess of negative energies (not compatible with the harmonious flow of the vital energies) or a deficiency of positive energies.

We therefore do not need a bigger argument that the expert use of the "Shamanic (Psychocatalytic) Medicines" in the context of the Shamanic Medicine has nothing to do with the chaotic and inexpert use of narcotics in the context of the tragic phenomenon of drug addiction in our modern times. The shamanic use of these medicines is due to millennial wisdom and represents the medical and cultural inheritance of all the indigenous people of South America since times immemorial.

In general, the South American lineage of Indian Shamanism distinguishes itself of an imposing abundance of very extraordinary healing plants. Among them we also find these “Sacred Power Plants", as for example the SAN PEDRO CACTUS (botanical name: Trichocereus Pacchanoi) of the Andean mountains and – among many others – the AYAHUASCA VINE (botanical name: Banisteriopsis Caapi) of the tropical forests of the Amazon basin. To them we owe the activation and energetic transformation of the lucid every day’s consciousness and of the sensorial routine perception into the "Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness", which is indispensable for the shamanic cure. Because through waking up that latent "Doctor Within" in the deepest (archetypal or transpersonal) layers of our subconsciousness, simultaneously takes place a rectifying reprogramming of the not well driven vital impulses and a liberating transformation of blocked vital energy patterns.

SAN PEDRO - WACHUMA - MESCALITO

It is surprising that in the contemporary medical literature these Shamanic Plants and Medicines and their active principles are still qualified incorrectly as "Hallucinogenic Plants or Substances". This denomination is false, because hallucination means to perceive something that does not exist. Nevertheless, the shamanic medicines rather facilitate the perception of the unknown symbols of our inner reality in the deepest layers of our subconsciousness; and of entities, ingredients and subtle energy emissions of the external reality, those that are not perceptible for our five coarse senses.

However, the Shamanic Plants and Medicines are not at all hallucinogens but "Psychocatalysts" that facilitate the perception of the unknown material in our subconsciousness with lucid consciousness.

The notorious incrimination of these "Psychocatalytic Medicines" as "Drugs" by the WHO (World Health Organization) is not only untenable, examined closely at the  wisdom of Shamanism, but is totally absurd and truly grotesque, because - among other benefits - the "Sacred Power Plants" are also extremely capable to cure the very drug addiction. In addition, due to their own dynamics they produce an interior confrontation with oneself that in no way tends to lead a person to euphoric and pleasant experiences. For this reason, they are very inadequate of producing an addiction. Rather, from this same interior confrontation derives the possibility to become aware of impure or hidden pathogenic energies in the structures of our subconsciousness and to cleanse and transform them shamanically.

However, not few people shrink back from a shamanic cure of their problems, because they fear this inner confrontation. However, the enemy in the case of an illness is already indoors, whether we want to see it or not. Thus, an ostrich - strategy really cannot lead to a healing.

We should wonder: Why have the Psychocatalytic or Shamanic Medicines been forbidden? They do not produce any dependence and prove true through their unique healing power – inaccessible for the Formal Medicine –, if an experienced shaman uses them expertly. Did they forbid these medicines only because the doctors do not know how to handle them? Consider that the doctors use such heavy, gravely addictive poisons, as the opium and its by products legally in our clinics!

In the interest for the health of the whole humanity, the rejuvenated investigation of the healing effects of these psychocatalytic medicines has ended up being from now on an unconditional demand of our time that we should not postpone any more. However, it should be carried through seriously this time, i.e. under a competent, shamanic guidance!

If the use of the opium and the morphine, being a drug with only palliative but no healing effects, is accepted and legalized in the Western Mainstream Medicine, with much more reason should we authorize the Shamanic Plants and Medicines that are recognized anthropologically as traditional medicines of the shamanic healing system. The right of the indigenous peoples to use these medicines and to exercise its medicinal wisdom of millennial tradition is inalienable. Consequently, their expressed recognition in the legal health codes and laws on the matter is very necessary.

A historical model and example for the official recognition of the Psychocatalytic Plants and Medicines in the context of the Shamanic Medicine represents the Native Church of America. It legally officiates and watches over these shamanic sacraments since 1980, when the North American president Jimmy Carter subscribed an agreement, allowing the use of the Shamanic Plants inside this Church and exempting them this way from the list of forbidden psychotropic substances of the Convention of Vienna from 1979. With more reason should these medicines be official in Venezuela (and in all South America), where their use is a millennial inheritance and still a daily reality in the indigenous communities.

The catalytic activation of our subconsciousness produces the awakening of our rusty vital capacities. From there springs forth the reactivation of our natural, original and sensitive interaction - frequently already lost since much time - with the energies of nature and our celestial Father's Divine Spirit, the almighty Creator. Due to this "vitaminization" and reconnection with the physical and spiritual vibrations of life, nearly all health disturbances (disharmonies of our subtle body) can become healthy again at their very energetic root. To them belong the lack of happiness and of the reason of living (in serious Depressions or Addictive Illnesses), inexplicable anguish (frequently as a consequence of traumatic experiences in the past lifetime), morbid personality features (as paranoiac or passionate habits); equally as disorders of the organic functions and Degenerative Illnesses, as the Multiple Sclerosis, etc.

In the millennial tradition of Shamanism, the world of vision and faith still represented the unanswerable path toward the cure. Through our inner awakening, we will experience the domination of the constraining shackles of our thoughts and accustomed mental patterns, beginning now to discover the marvels of an indescribable, mystic and extremely healing perception of reality.

We are totally aware that the phenomenon "Shamanism", falling progressively since already some decades in the footlights of the public media, has become a topic in fashion and precisely for that reason also a problematic and contradictory topic for many people. In our days, numerous chatterers, pseudo-shamans, businesspersons and writers of sensationalist articles, attracted in certain way like moths by these footlights, poison the nectar of the wisdom of the Shamanic Medicine taken care of for millennia. Never confuse Shamanic Medicine with the doubtful practices and the black magic of the witchdoctors, sorcerers, occultists, impostors and swindlers, for it, in fact, represents the inherited wisdom of our ancestors of humanity, directed toward the ingenious activation of our internal healing potential.

For obvious reasons, it is very impossible for the non-professional to be able to separate in this field the straw from the wheat, since there is little wheat (authentic shamans), a lot of straw and still much more non-professionals with frequently adventurous, subjective and speculative views on Shamanism. However, we should not allow becoming victims of the erroneous opinion that there is no wheat, because the field had begun to cover entirely with weeds. For that reason, we are sincerely glad to have found with Dr. Hampejs an authentic wisdom holder of Indian Shamanism.

However, I should still advance a thing: Anyone that wants to discover the mystic phenomena of the shamanic cure has to be willing, from the very beginning, to abandon attitudes of intellectual or scientific arrogance. For the uninitiated participants, these experiences still are strange and unknown at first and it needs an expert leadership, to be able to benefit from them for the sake of healing purposes. Try, with an open heart, to understand yourself as a student that goes learning in a very new way, if you want to reach the access to those secrets of the life, which Shamanic Medicine can provide.

Better an end (of the illness) with fright

than the terror (of the illness) without an end.

THE SHAMANIC CURE OF DEPRESSION

With most of the people concerned or affected by this dramatic illness, who possibly have taken the trouble to heal or to at least ease their cruel mental ailment of exhaustions and anguish already since decades with the methods known by western psychiatry, this question will possibly evoke only an incredulous head shake. For the Austrian MD, Heinz Valentin Hampejs, by profession specialist for neurology, psychiatry, general medicine and investigator of Shamanism in South America, obviously is this no more a question, however, because he assures to finally be able to heal this ailment definitely in at the most three weeks. For this, however, the psychoenergetic transformation potential of the so-called "Sacred Power Plants" of the Indian-American Shamanism is imperative. The doctor explains to be able to put under proof anytime his assertion about the shamanic curability of the "Endogenous Depression". In order to be able to do this anywhere, however, a free special importation and application permission would have to be granted for the medicines required for this demonstration (i.e. for AYAHUASCA, botanical name: Banisteriopsis Caapi; and SAN PEDRO, botanical name: Trichocereus Pacchanoi).
INTRODUCTION IN A SHAMANIC CEREMONY

Dr. Hampejs devotes himself since nearly thirty years to the exploration, teaching and practice of the Shamanic medicine of South and North America. In 1991  he wrote a scientific monograph by commission of the Public Health Board from Ecuador about the psychoenergetic principles operating in Indian Shamanism, entitled: "El X-tasis Shamánico de la Conciencia - Principio Medular de la Medicina Shamánica" (published by  Editorial ABYA -YALA, Quito, Ecuador in 1994).

(The German version entitled „Die Schamanische Bewusstseinsekstase - Kernprinzip der Schamanischen Medizin“ will be published soon by Kollateral Verlag (GmbH) UG Ludwig Erhard Str.30 in 65760 Eschborn, Deutschland; the Spanish version is being published by ABYA YALA Edit./Quito Ecuador since 1994.) {Translation of the titles: „The Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness – Core Principle of Shamanic Medicine“}

THE SHAMANIC CURE OF THE DEPRESSION
IN THE EXAMPLE OF TWO YOUNG WOMEN
IN ECUADOR

In May 2004 a friend from Pirmasens, Germany, informed me that I could address to the so called ("Net of competencies for depressions of Germany") that represents an initiative aided by the European Union (UE) to sensitize people affected by depressive illnesses and the public in general through the Internet. Well, I had undertaken a personal initiative already at the beginning of the month to noise abroad among friends in Europe the information on the shamanic curability of the so called "Endogenous Depression". Naturally I was very grateful to have received this indication, because I could address now to an already preexistent platform of information exchange, about whose existence had not known before.

It is widely known that the depression, denominated "endogenous" by the formal medicine, is an illness of the soul, spirit and mind, characterized by such states of psychoenergetic exhaustion, anguishes and desperation that affected people prefer with alarming frequency to suicide themselves in exchange for their existential martyrdom. The depression is the illness with the biggest incidence of suicides at world level (!), and in view of the shamanic curability of the depression, relatively easy; it was a genuine desire to put in circulation this information, since in my shamanic rituals depressive patients are healed definitively in maximum three weeks.

  1. To tell the truth, my wife and I participated in this night ritual with the SAN PEDRO* - MEDICINE, carried out in the surroundings of Quito / Ecuador, only as invited shamans. Hilario Chiriap, a young shaman of the tribe of the Shuaras, who lead this ritual, honored me when inviting me spontaneously to direct the ceremony in union with him.
SAN PEDRO - WACHUMA - MESCALITO

The ingestion of the SAN PEDRO - MEDICINE* submerged us in a special state of consciousness and perception, known as “Shamanic Ecstasy of Consciousness". We already had spent some hours in this night with prayers, mantric and shamanic healing and invocation songs, when a young female participant named Paola, approximately 23 years old, began to cry deplorably and to call for her mother with all her body shaken by continuous moving sobs: "Mama, Mama, Mama, Mama! “. The woman's state, really worthy of pity, intensified by moments in such a way that all the other ones began to worry seriously, particularly when this situation had already continued about three hours; and neither the interventions of Hilario neither of the other participants, in their majority also familiarized with the Shamanic Medicine, were able to provide a real and effective help to the patient in this passage so dramatic of her harrowing psychic state. Suddenly I "knew", "saw", what had happened in the past of the girl's life, and without thinking it a lot, I proceeded to ask her: "Do you know, on principle, why you are calling for your mother so despairingly? “ She didn’t respond. – "Because, she wanted to abort you!”

Then I passed over to her on the other side, and while talking to her peacefully that she would have to learn now how to forgive her mother, I gave her three blessed blows with my Medicine - Pipe on her hands, joined in prayer, on her crown, her back and her chest. “She, in these moments, was living with her mother in the same house, the one that today is her best friend and she could not know the desperate circumstances, in which her progenitor was during her pregnancy. To who of us would not have to be forgiven something?" After five minutes, Paola was calm and centered. In the morning she separated a little from the group, sat down above a high rock in the proximity with the body bent forward and the arm crossed on her calves and was obviously absorbed in a deep meditation.

  1. This SAN PEDRO - RITUAL was carried out in our own place of rituals in Tumbaco, near Quito, and it was under my personal direction. Mónica, an approximately forty year-old woman, was seated to my right; there were also present about eight young men and women. Having already lapsed some hours, I felt that I should help her, because she was very nauseous; and I felt that these nauseas wouldn’t diminish although she had already vomited several times. It also called my attention that she was seated with her legs attracted to her belly, in curved position like an embryo.
When I blew an alcoholic extract of aromatic herbs on her hands joined by way of prayer, she entered immediately in such sobs, mewls and cries that I was moved to sit down next in order to tranquilize her with my hug. Lapsed this way more or less half hour, she calmed finally and babbled, still sobbing, that to her mother had died another infant, when she was pregnant with her.

Monica knew naturally about her little brother's tragic death, because they had related it to her, but the cellular memory of her body could remember the abysmal sadness, to which she was subjected in her mother's belly along some months during the pregnancy and the one that was still instilled into her after her birth with the maternal milk, only due to this ritual experience. In spite of all the psychiatric helps, Monica had suffered of serious depressions during many years, without being able to even imagine, which the causes of her depression were. However, also in this case a single shamanic ceremony was needed to cure her.
* * * * * *
With these two casuistically examples I don't want to insinuate in no way that the maternal intention of aborting the fetus or the death of an infant during the mother's pregnancy would represent the only imaginable causes for the manifestation of a depression in the later life of this fetus.

If it could not be understood that these two women were liberated definitively of their depressions with these ritual experiences, it is because one doesn't simply want to understand. But for thinking men it should be of easy understanding at least that such a DEFINITIVE CURE cannot be produced neither with antidepressant pills neither with electric shocks, classically applied in the psychiatric hospitals (and much less with the futurist implantation of some type of chips (!)), because in the best (?) of the cases these measures would be only symptomatic, used exclusively to hide and to camouflage the symptoms of the depression - very similar to the relief of a pain with analgesic remedies that definitively cannot eliminate its cause.

I said "in the best (?) of the cases", because it is a settled fact that the medical authorities of the USA (the FDA - Food & Drug Administration)) did the antidepressants put in the stool of accused: It was recognized that they are related to a bigger suicide risk among the youths, and the experts make strong warnings to doctors and patients. These studies showed that a youth that ingests the investigated antidepressants ("Prozac" and "Zoloft", among others) has a risk of having suicidal thoughts twice as much than another one to who are administered placebos.

But apart from these "side effects", the medication of antidepressants transfers the sick making mechanisms at the bottom of the depression still more under the carpet, that is to say toward the subconscious, what prevents the patients to end up understanding their illness and to discover its possible causes, for then to be able to learn of how to overcome them. It is incontestably certain for me, both as psychiatrist and as shaman with long years of experience, that the real and definitive healing of “Endogenous Depression  can be implemented only with the indispensable assistance of the so-called “Sacred Power Plants” of Indian- American Shamanism, because, opposed to the concealing strategy of the classical psychiatric treatment, they facilitate the PSYCHOCATALYTIC** liberation of the pathogenic material contained in the deepest structures of our subconscious. No procedures of any kind of alternative methods can find access there. Undoubtedly these shamanic medicines only can be used under the expert guidance of an experienced shaman.

In view of the 80 millions abortions appraised at world level annually, it is more than probable that some people among you are suffering for a similar reason of depressions, whose cause is a serious deficiency of vitality that can bring about cruel states of psychoenergetic exhaustion. In the casuistry presented a little while ago, it becomes visible, how such a deficiency of vitality comes into being "endogenously". To understand this, no medical university education is needed, but just a healthy common sense.

I suppose that your mother, for comprehensible reasons, kept secret before you such a possible crisis of consciousness that could have existed during her pregnancy, or that she could not even communicate it nowadays. To be able to liberate the subtle energy scheme (the cellular and reticular memory) of the body from such negative, destructive energies and to load it ("vitaminize" it) with natural vital forces, much deeper and more efficient instruments are needed than those that are at the disposal of the conventional psychotherapy, that is: the employment shamanically administered of the so called "Sacred Power Plants" of the Indian-American Shamanism.

Their notorious incrimination as "drugs" by the WHO (World Health Organization) is not only antiquated, because it has always been objectionable by the light of the ancestral wisdom of Shamanism, but is totally absurd and truly grotesquebecause – among other things – the Sacred Power Plants" are also extremely capable to cure even the very drug-addiction, being equally incurable for the formal medicine!

Why, to tell the truth, should the Psychocatalytic or Shamanic Medicines that don’t produce any dependence and are characterized by a healing power inaccessible for the formal medicine, if they are used expertly by an experienced shaman – be prohibited? … When such heavy poisons, gravely addictive, as the opium or the morphine can be used legally in our clinics? – Maybe, only because the doctors don't know how to manage the shamanic medicines? In the interest for the health of the whole humanity, the rejuvenated investigation — but now carried through seriously under a competent, i.e. shamanic guidance (!) — of the healing effects of these Psychocatalytic Medicines has ended up being from now on an unconditional demand of our time that should not be more postponed.

*SAN PEDRO - botanical denomination: Trichocereus Pacchanoi, a cactus of the Andes whose medicinal agent is the alkaloid mescaline.
**PSICOCATALITIC - term that refers to the catalytic action of the shamanic medicines on the subconscious and the consciousness, because due to it, the material deposited in our subconscious becomes perceptible for the consciousness.
